One of the reasons I love fashion is because it can be a great means of expressing ourselves. We can transmit so much with our mere presence when we find our style and learn to harness its power- and it can leave us feeling amazing!
But if there’s one thing that bugs me about the world of fashion is all the rules it seems to have! “Don’t pair this with that”, “don’t wear this after a certain day”, “that thing you love is now a faux-pas” etc. It gets pretty old pretty fast, and it robs us of our pleasure of simply having fun with fashion.
So today’s post is just about that! I want to share the 5 little tips I use when I want to let my hair down, throw my hands in the air and just experiment, explore and have fun with fashion:
Wear those cute, sparkly shoes during the day
A lot of women own some seriously attention grabbing shoes- but they never see the light of day. Instead, they’re kept solely (pun intended) for special occasions, date nights and glam parties. Which is not wrong per se- but I can’t help but do a double take whenever I see a pair of glam “evening” sandals in broad daylight, next to an otherwise plain look.
So next time you’re itching to bust out those eye-catching shoes, but think you have no-where to go, just go for it! Pair them with your basic black jeans, white shirt and a slick of red lipstick, or your summery sundress and seize the day. Thank me later 🙂
Add a touch of pink
If there is one colour that screams lighthearted fun, it has to be pink! From soft blush to bright fuchsia, there’s a shade our there for everyone- a shade that will make you feel more upbeat, bubbly or even mischievous. And a shade that will make your inner 5-year-old squeal with delight- because she deserves to come out and play sometimes too!
And if you’re vehement about “pink not being your colour”, just know you can wear pretty much any shade if you keep it away from your face. Think skirts & pants, shoes, bags instead of tops, earrings or scarves. Try this tip out and come back to me!
Take a page out of a children’s book
And speaking of letting your inner child have some of the fun too, feel free to add something completely silly or childish to your outfit. You don’t have to take yourself seriously all the time- so why not try an oversized ladybug brooch with a breton top for example? Or a set of colourful bangles to decorate your wrists with? Or even an Alice in Wonderland inspired bag?
Now I’m not saying you do so for the office- but how about for evening drinks on a terrace, or for a seaside holiday? It can be liberating to give your usual grown up looks a breather, and allow for a bit of childlike exhuberance to come out.
Pin a couple of flowers in your hair
This is one of my favorite things to do lately! Flower pins are absolutely perfect for summer, and can lend any look a casual, fun and flirty air. I got mine from Asos, and I have to say they work so well with so many outfits- whether I’m feeling more bohemian flower-child or more elegant and lady-like.
Go for ruffles
Now I’m sure my mom will be stifling a laugh as she reads this (hi, mom!)- because I’ve hated ruffles with a vengeance for a long, long time. But tastes do change, and I have to say I’ve started to warm up to them.
Because ruffles can be great for making an outfit look a touch less serious and more fun. They can also be used to draw attention to a specific part of your outfit and accentuate the areas where they’re placed on. And as long as you don’t go overboard with them, they can actually be a great wardrobe addition to play with.
I’d really love to hear from you ladies now- how do you like to have fun with your outfits? Do you see fashion as something to be taken seriously, or as a playground to let your imagination run wild across? Let me know in the comments below!
